In a PON, the OLT at the central office drives each fiber tree while ONTs at subscriber premises hand off Ethernet, Wi-Fi, voice and video; between them the passive splitter network carries everything unpowered. GPON remains the access workhorse with XGS-PON as the symmetrical 10-gigabit upgrade path — equipment classes designed to align with ITU-T G.984 and G.9807 respectively — while media converters and SFP/SFP+ transceivers extend the same optical discipline into enterprise LANs, surveillance and point-to-point links.
